Top 5 Biotech Companies To Own For 2016

With theSPDR S&P Biotech Indexup 35% over the trailing-12-month period, it's evident that investment dollars are willingly flowing into the biotech sector. Keeping that in mind, let's have a look at some of the rulings, studies, and companies that made waves in the sector last week.

There weren't many well-known names making big moves this week, but we were privy to a good variety of stories including FDA designations and new drug filings, plenty of analyst action, and a late-week, rally-killing share offering.

The best-known, and potentially most exciting, story of the week was the Food and Drug Administration's classification of Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE  ) Palbociclib as a "breakthrough therapy." Palbociclib is an oral treatment for ER+, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer that, in trials, when combined with Novartis'Femara, crushed the control arm made up of Femara alone in terms of progression-free survival (26.1 months versus 7.5 months). Those amazing results earned Palbociclib this extremely rare designation from the FDA, which should help expedite its development and hopeful approval of the drug.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

More than a handful of rapidly growing companies had strong performances over the past year. Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD  ) surged 131%, for example, with investors hopeful about its oral hepatitis C drug, sofosbuvir, which has cleared four phase 3 trials and received priority-review designation from the FDA. The company has also been doing well with its HIV drugs in recent years, though sales of some have been flagging and competition looms. The stock may not look like a bargain with a P/E ratio in the 30s, but its five-year projected earnings growth rate is around 26%.

  • [By David Williamson]

In this video, David Williamson reviews some of his favorite biotech firms. Many analysts have thrown their weight behind Biogen (NASDAQ: BIIB  ) and its new BG12 drug for multiple sclerosis. However, David favors Gilead (NASDAQ: GILD  ) over Biogen since Gileadhas alarger, more diverse product pipeline. Celgene (NASDAQ: CELG  ) is the No. 1 biotech in David's opinion since it also has blockbuster drugs but a PEG of less than 1.0. Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN  ) isa big company with more products in development than most people realize. Overall, for value and future earnings potential, David likes Celgene the best.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Celgene gained 0.6% to $142.06 today, even as Amgen (AMGN) dropped 2% to 111.41, Biogen (BIIB) fell 3.1% to $285.81 and the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) declined 3.9% to $124.37, extending its losing streak to three days. Gilead Sciences (GILD) dipped 0.2% to $73.90, ending a nine-day winning streak

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Fisher reduced its stake in lots of companies, including Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) . Capstone is a smallish company, making low-emission microturbines used in power generation. Its top line has be! en growing by double digits over the past few years, and it's poised to profit from huge interest in shale oil, but it remains in the red. Still, it has recently announced a bunch of promising deals and some think the many folks short the stock will end up burned.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Beyond the fundamentals, though, news plays an important role in short-term stock movements. Outside the Dow, microturbine producer Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) soared 8.8% after receiving its second large order in the past week. After getting word of a purchase from real-estate and investment firm Related Companies on Tuesday, Capstone got an order today from Southern California Gas to buy three of its C65 uninterruptible power-source units for use at the gas company's data center. Given the relatively small size of the business, which sports sales of only about $122 million over the past year, orders like this have a material effect on Capstone and also draw the attention of other prospective buyers.

Shares of future exchange operator CME Group (NASDAQ: CME  ) advanced 1.5% after being mentioned favorably on CNBC by commentator Simon Baker. While I normally would recommend paying little attention to the opinions of analysts, today's move could have more to do with the increasing volatility, given the move lower, which is very likely to increase futures contract volume. Sometimes, the worst of times brings about the best business for CME Group, and we could be seeing signs of that with today's big move higher.

Top Trucking Stocks For 2015

May certainly ended on a confusing note for the broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) , despite tacking on gains for the seventh consecutive month.

Like yesterday, which saw us rise on what I would have deemed somewhat poor economic news, the S&P 500 fell today on what appeared to be upbeat economic data. The Chicago PMI, which is a measure of manufacturing strength in the Midwest, surged to a reading of 58.7 in May, which is a strong reversal from the slight contraction it experienced in April. Furthermore, the final reading on the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index came in at 84.5, and signals that people are more confident in this recovery than they've been in years.

All that data went for naught, however, as the S&P 500 succumbed to the worries that it's come too far, too fast, and tumbled 23.67 points (-1.43%), to close at 1,630.74. In spite of today's downdraft, three companies bucked today's weakness and moved higher.

Diesel and natural gas engine maker Cummins (NYSE: CMI  ) turned in a strong gain of 1.7% despite no company-specific news. In this case, I'd postulate that today's move related to the bullish Chicago PMI data, which would suggest that manufacturing activity is picking up, and that the need for newer, more fuel-efficient engines to power trucking fleets will soon follow. Cummins was certainly sitting prettier when natural gas prices were in the $2/mbtu range, but even now looks like a fantastic value, with natural gas prices topping $4/mbtu, given the high prices of traditional gasoline, and the need for trucking companies to save over the long term by investing now in fuel-efficient engines.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 independent oil and gas player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Goodrich Petroleum (GDP) which is engaged in the exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas. This stock has been smashed lower by the bears over the last six months, with shares down sharply by 64%.

If you take a glance at the chart for Goodrich Petroleum you'll see that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months and change, with shares falling sharply lower from its high of $22.61 to its new 52-week low of $7.01 a share. During that downtrend, shares of GDP have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of GDP have now started to bounce higher off its 52-week low and it's beginning to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GDP if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $9.48 to around $9.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 2.07 million shares. If that breakout develops soon, then GDP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 50-day moving average of $11.80 to $12.09 a share., or even $13 to $14 a share.

Traders can look to buy GDP off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $8.30 to $8 a share. One can also buy GDP off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Finally, because three isn't a crowd when it comes to receiving dividends, we received our $0.2637 per share distribution from France Telecom (NYSE: ORAN  ) . France Telecom pays out two semi-annual dividends each year that can vary wildly in size. Like Exelon, France Telecom reduced its dividend by more than 40% recently, but is still pledging to deliver what would equate to at least 0.80 euros ($1.07) this year. That would equate to a yield of 10.8% based on yesterday's closing price, and the prospect of nearly an $0.80 dividend being announced later this summer. Don't be surprised if you see income seekers jumping into France Telecom in the coming months.

Hot Media Companies To Buy For 2015

Major indexes broke through round-number barriers Tuesday as the rally on Wall Street takes stocks to levels some thought they wouldn't see in a long while.

The Wilshire 5000 index, the broadest measure of the entire stock market, jumped 322.29 points to close at 20,133.02. It's the first major U.S. stock index to close above 20,000. And the much-watched measure of shares of small companies, the Russell 2000, jumped 32 points to close at a new high of 1208.38, breaking the 1200 barrier for the first time.

JOB GROWTH: Investors eye Friday report

The rally was a recovery from Monday's slide and came after Russian President Vladimir Putin made statements indicating he isn't planning to immediately escalate military efforts in Crimea. And with that major scare out of the way for now, big round numbers of psychological import are starting to dominate chatter from Wall Street to the water cooler. The Standard & Poor's 500, at Tuesday's close of 1873.91, is knocking on the door of 1900. And talk that Nasdaq 5000 is actually looking possible is surfacing for the first time in 15 years.

Disrupting the overall industry is the growing availability of streaming sports through the various leagues and online versions of Disney's (NYSE: DIS  ) ESPN.

What specifically led both stocks higher today was speculation that Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) is on the acquisition hunt. According to CNBC, Time Warner Cable's CEO Glenn Britt has discussed the possibility of merging with Charter; however, CNBC also commented that Time Warner Cable isn't likely to pursue the deal. That still proved more than enough to send Time Warner Cable and rival Cablevision higher, as any M&A acquisition in this sector would only serve to improve pricing power for these broadcasting companies.

Leading the charge is cable operator Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) again found itself in the spotlight, up 9.6%, following the completion of its sale of Optimum West to Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) for $1.625 billion. While shareholders are likely to be pleased seeing this deal completed, shares are really ramping up in expectation that Charter may make a bid for Cablevision. Rumors have been circulating for a week based on a report from Bloomberg News that Charter may look to make a bid for Time Warner Cableor Cablevision. My stance remains not to chase rumors higher, so I'd suggest watching Cablevision from the sidelines.

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

On Thursday, Intel Corp (INTC) announced that it has made a “significant equity investment” in Cloudera, a Big Data startup.

Chipmaker Intel is now Cloudera’s largest shareholder, though Intel did not give details on the exact amount of its investment. Falling PC sales have affected Intel’s chip sales, and the company’s investment in Cloudera is seen as a way for Intel to diversify its business. The deal announced today will see Intel’s Xeon technology join with Cloudera’s enterprise analytic data management software, which is powered by Apache Hadoop.

Intel’s VP and general manager of the company’s data center group, Diane Bryant, had the following comments about the deal:y aligning the Cloudera and Intel roadmaps, we are creating the platform of choice for big data analytics. We expect to accelerate industry adoption of the Hadoop data platform and enable companies to mine their data for insights that inform the business. This collaboration spans our data center technology from compute to network, security and storage, and extends to our initiatives for the Internet of Things./p>

Intel stock closed the day down slightly, losing 7 cents, or 0.26%, but it was moving higher in after hours trading. YTD, the company’s stock is down 1.59%.

Advisors' Opinion:

ADDvantage (AEY) sells at 95% of NCAV, has similar (in the ballpark) scores and FCF and ROA of 23%.

The slightly better businesses are currently more expensive in terms of price/NCAV. They have less asset-based downside protection, but they are better businesses.

How do you quantify and qualify what is cheap enough? To me, there's a big difference in relative cheapness in a company selling at 74% of NCAV versus one selling at 95%. I'm wondering if I'm putting too much weight on this cheapness measurement instead of acknowledging that any decent business selling at less than NCAV is cheap enough. Yet, one has to have some quantifiable idea of when something is not cheap enough anymore.

Can you help me put this into a unified framework?

Top 10 Semiconductor Stocks To Invest In Right Now: M/A-COM Technology Solutions Holdings Inc (MTSI)

M/A-COM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (M/A-COM), incorporated on March 25, 2009, is a provider of high-performance analog semiconductor solutions for uses in wireless and wireline applications across the radio frequency (RF), microwave and millimeter wave spectrum.
