Top 5 Prefered Companies To Buy For 2014

When I received my MBA 20 years ago, I thought I was pretty well versed in the world of finance. But when I got to Wall Street that summer, I was quickly overwhelmed.

A litany of phrases were tossed out that I never read about in my finance textbooks. Here's just a small sample of investing phrases that they never talked about in b-school.

"I'm looking for the stock to consolidate from here."

Translation: I expect this stock to start falling and wouldn't want to buy it. This is a similar sentiment to a Wall Street downgrade from "buy" to "neutral" or "hold." Such downgrades actually mean a stock is very unappealing and bound to fall in price. Analysts use that code to avoid the dreaded "sell" rating, which can alienate them from the companies they follow. "I smell a secondary."

Top 5 Quality Stocks To Own Right Now: Gastar Exploration Ltd (GST)

Gastar Exploration Ltd (Gastar) is an independent energy company engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas and oil in the United States. The Company principal business activities include the identification, acquisition, and subsequent exploration and development of natural gas and oil properties with an emphasis on unconventional reserves, such as shale resource plays. As of December 31, 2011, it is pursuing the development of liquids-rich natural gas in the Marcellus Shale in the Appalachia area of West Virginia and, to a lesser extent, central and southwestern Pennsylvania. The Company also holds prospective acreage in the deep Bossier play in the Hilltop area of East Texas and conduct limited coal bed methane (CBM) development activities within the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana. The Company is a holding company. Advisors' Opinion:

The parallel to Goodrich in the transaction is Gastar Exploration (GST), which has approximately 100,000 net acres in the Hunton (excluding additional exposure from the WEHLU deal). Gastar, similar to Goodrich prior to the Sanchez TMS deal, seems to trade at a discount to a $2,000 per acre implied value for its unconventional oil acreage. In fact, Gastar's CEO recently said he thought the current liquidation value of Gastar's Marcellus assets would be $4-7 per share, net of debt, versus the current $4.25 share price.

Gastar Exploration (NYSE: GST) is another Aggressive Portfolio pick made on Dec. 11, and so far it has rallied quite aggressively, producing a three-week capital gain of 26 percent. It helped here too to catch the very bottom of the recent correction, but Gastar has continued to report strong test well results from the Hunton Limestone play it’s pioneering in Oklahoma.

  • [By David Smith]

Earlier, the company had pocketed $75.2 million by selling to Gastar Exploration (NYSEMKT: GST  ) leasehold acreage in Oklahoma's Kingfisher and Canadian counties. It'll obviously require a passel of sales of that magnitude to shore up an overweight balance sheet.

The other two on the list are basic materials, they could begood long-term to my stock portfolio. Assuming scarcity as their global trend (need to learn more here.)

From the fundamental analysis: Rio is cheaper than BHP. But, RIO is qualitatively inferior when compared to BHP (ROIC, ROE, ROA). I have not looked at Vale (VALE), so maybe next weekend I will continue this exercise with VALE.

At the start of my Real Money Portfolio, I want to address a few key points. I knew that my first pick had to be a company that could be the cornerstone of my portfolio and generate income through dividend payments along with the potential for growth in share price. Global diversification is also a key tenet that I have my eye on. The final criterion that I want to build around is value. When screening for these qualities, Vale S.A. (NYSE: VALE  ) leapt out at me.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Brazil-based Vale (NYSE: VALE  ) sank 33%, though the world's largest iron-ore concern offers a tempting dividend yield recently near 6%. Its forward P/E near 6 is less than half of its five-year average of 14, and the stock looks undervalued to many, though some aren't convinced. Vale has been tackling soft demand by cutting its costs significantly. The company's CEO is talking of restrained and disciplined capital spending.

Vale S.A. (NYSE: VALE) is the world largest producer of iron ore and pellets and has extensive China and emerging market exposure as a result. Despite the slowing emerging market story, Vale’s $14.90 share price now versus $13.15 at the time has brought gains of over 13%. Deutsche Bank target price was $22 and the consensus target was closer to $21.40 on July 1. Now the consensus price target is down to $20.16, but that is still much higher then the current price. A yield of almost 5% also stands out with a 52-week range of $12.39 to $21.88.

It was feast or famine for investors in Chinese Internet retailers this past week. Shares of online bookseller Dangdang (NYSE: DANG  ) soared 37% after posting strong quarterly results, but LightInTheBox (NYSE: LITB  ) went the other way after once again disappointing the market.

Alamy The market may have rallied remarkably this year, but there are plenty of stocks that never got the memo. Dozens of stocks are hitting fresh 52-week lows these days, and some of them aren't as bad as their low stock prices would seem to suggest. Last week, I took a look at five stocks that didn't deserve to be hitting new 52-week highs. Now it's time to flip things around and look at five stocks that hit new 52-week lows last week that are prime candidates to bounce back. Dice Holdings (DHX) 52-Week Range: $6.83-$10.43 Dice operates several industry-specific career and employment websites, including the namesake Dice.com for tech jobs, ClearanceJobs.com for jobs that require security clearance, and Rigzone.com for jobs in the oil industry. It's a novel approach to helping folks in specific sectors network, and naturally this is magnetic to potential employers. The success of LinkedIn (LNKD) may have taken some of the shine off Dice, but the company's still finding ways to grow. Analysts see revenue climbing at a slightly better than 6 percent clip this year and again in 2014. Kinder Morgan (KMI) 52-Week Range: $32.30-$41.49 Kinder Morgan watches over the country's largest network of natural gas pipelines. Thanks to its reputation as a cleaner energy source than coal or petroleum (and the massive upsurge in U.S. production thanks to the fracking boom), natural gas is a growing source of domestic energy. Even commercial vehicles are starting to be powered by liquefied natural gas. Kinder Morgan is growing, but it has missed Wall Street's profit targets in each of the three past quarters. That's been enough to scare off some investors. However, the falling share price has also made Kinder Morgan's healthy dividend that much more compelling. The stock's yield of 4.6 percent is too rich to ignore here. Liquidity Services (LQDT) 52-Week Range: $20.37-$44.40 Liquidity Services prides itself as a problem solver.
