Dollar stores can be a good source of deals -- if you know what to buy, that is. For starters, not everything is a dollar at some of these discount stores. So the price you're paying might not be any lower than at other stores. Even at stores where all items are a dollar, some of the merchandise may not be worth a buck.
SEE ALSO: Best Buys at Warehouse Clubs, Grocers and Big-Box StoresTo find out which dollar-store items really are deals, I spoke with savings guru Andrea Woroch. And I visited a local dollar store (where everything actually was $1) and compared products and prices at a grocery store and big-box retailers. Here are ten things that you should be buying at the dollar store.
Cleaning supplies. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute found that dollar-store brand cleaners work just as well as name-brand cleaners, Woroch says, but they cost about 30% less. However, they tend to be a little more diluted, so you might have to use more to get things clean. Sponges and scrub brushes also are cheaper at the dollar store. I found a two-pack of scrubbing sponges for $1 at the dollar store, but the cheapest I could find at the grocery was one sponge for $1.29. Two items that cost the same at both the dollar store and the grocery: 14-ounce Ajax dish soap and 25-ounce Comet.

Getty Images From a popular multiplex operator going public to a retailer getting hacked at the worst possible time, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst news from the business world. Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) -- Winner Chipotle is getting a new stamp in its ethnic cuisine passport. Having mastered Mexican, it was already giving Asian a shot with its new ShopHouse chain. And now, we can add Italian to its map after Chipotle revealed this week that it's a financial backer of Pizzeria Locale. The fast casual concept gives pizza a Chipotle-like makeover with folks ordering at the counter, customizing their 11-inch pies along the assembly line, after which they are baked in a speedy oven that serves up tasty pies in just two minutes. Chipotle's growing just fine with its flagship burrito chain, but it never hurts to diversify before expansion-fueled growth plateaus, or tastes change. Target (TGT) -- Loser Holiday shopping at Target may ultimately prove to more trouble than bargain seekers were hoping for this season. The cheap chic discounter revealed that hackers installed software that stole the info on more than 40 million credit and debit card transactions from Nov. 27 through Dec. 15. This is naturally going to be bad news for those that had their plastic compromised. Everyone that shopped at Target this season is being advised to carefully look over their statements. However, it's also very bad for the retailer at the worst possible time. Shoppers may not be too comfortable heading into Target during these last few shopping days before Christmas. AMC Entertainment (AMC) -- Winner Lights! Camera! IPO action! It may not have been the blockbuster IPO of the year, but the debut of the leading movie theater chain proved to be a success this week. AMC Entertainment went public at $18, opening 7 percent higher and staying above its IPO price. The leading exhibitor operates 343 movie theaters housing 4,950 screens. AMC entertains 200 million guests

IMAX (NYSE: IMAX ) has played a major part in beefing up box-office receipts in recent years. Patrons are willfully paying a few bucks more to screen new releases in IMAX's enhanced screenings, and that's good news for exhibitors, movie studios, and IMAX.

While the fermentation-based method is still in its development stages, a Malaysian company, PureCircle (LON: PURE) (OTCMKTS: PCRTF), the world largest producer of stevia, continues to develop its stevia through farm-based methods. Last September PureCircle, which also has offices in Oak Brook, Ill., signed a joint agreement with the Coca-Cola Coto investigate and develop a commercially viable stevia sweetener product; and earlier this month in a press release, the two companies announced they were developing what should be a better flavor profile than the much used Reb A with rebaudioside D (Reb D) and Rebaudioside X (Reb X). Reb D, though roughly 10% less sweet than Reb A, has a significantly lower bitterness that Reb A and has been found to have a more desirable taste profile, especially in cola products where stevia previously has not worked well. The issue with both Reb D and Reb X is that they are found in much smaller amounts than Reb A. Thus, at this time it will take a lot more stevia leaves to produce the extracts.

According to the global market research company Mintel, stevia-based products have increased 400% globally between 2008 and 2012, with a rise of 158% from 2011 to 2012.
