Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Dzombak]
Third among oil and gas stocks today was Western Refining (NYSE: WNR ) up 4.14%, to $32.43. During the refiners' drop on Tuesday and Wednesday, Delek dropped 11%. Despite the comeback today, the stock is still down 7.32% from where it was before the plunge. Last month, after crushing its earnings, Western Refining announced they were considering launching a master limited partnership for some of their midstream assets. MLP spinoffs have been a hot topic the past year as more and more companies take advantage of investors' hunt for yield, and the tax savings MLPs offer. Advisors' Opinion:- [By Lee Jackson]
Energy and Utilities: Tesoro Corp. (NYSE: TSO) is a bold call as the refining sector has been hammered. As spreads start to widen back out, this may be a very intriguing contrarian play for investors. Credit Suisse has a huge $65 target, while the consensus is right in line at $65 as well. Investors are paid a 2.2% dividend. A trade up to the target would represent a 53% gain for investors. Tesoro closed Tuesday at $43.10.
- [By Igor Greenwald]
Record refining profits are showing no letup. We're taking advantage of this multi-year window to add HollyFrontier (HFC) and Tesoro (TSO).
Tesoro has been the standout year-to-date with a gain of 29%. Meanwhile, HollyFrontier is the clear refining laggard, with a 41% one-year gain, and now down year-to-date. Despite its startlingly strong fundamentals, HollyFrontier has been plagued by fears that its future isn't as rosy as its past.
- [By Travis Hoium]
How to play it now
When oil prices go up and gas prices don't, it squeezes margins for refiners. So, after a nice run-up it might be time to take some profits in Valero (NYSE: VLO ) and Tesoro (NYSE: TSO ) , which generate most of their earnings from refining.

Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK )
I've mentioned Flotek Industries to Fools in the past. The relatively small ($940 million capitalization and growing) company provides a range of products and assistance for oil and gas operations, from well construction to production. It's also the only services company -- and one of but a handful of companies in any sector -- that's been accorded a perfect consensus of one (strong buy) by the analysts. - [By David Smith]
Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK )
The smallest member of the trio, with a market cap of about $815 million, Flotek operates on the services side of the energy sector. As I've previously pointed out to Fools, it also constitutes a rare instance wherein the analysts who monitor the company all accord it strong buy ratings. But with Flotek's share price having risen by more than 40% year to date, it is difficult to contest that unanimous confidence.
