Top 10 Beverage Stocks To Invest In 2015

Even though you're reading this now, odds are that three weeks ago you'd never even heard of Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd. (OTCMKTS:DKAM). And, like so many other young, nano-cap stocks, it would be easy to assume the current strength being exhibited by DKAM is nothing but a short-term phenomenon, meaning there's no particular reason to jump on the stock now. If there was ever a reason to jump onto a micro cap name for a quick trade though, this may be it.

As the name suggests, DKAM is a beverage stock. Specifically, Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd. is the distributor of well-known alcoholic beverages like KAH Tequila, Old Whiskey River Bourbon, Rheingold Beer, Chili Devil Beer, and Red Pig Ale, just to name a few. Sales have been decent too, relative to the market cap of $265,000 - the company has generated $6.3 million worth of revenue over the prior four quarters. It's not turned any of that revenue into profit, mind you; the organization lost $11.7 million over the course of the same timeframe. Then again, it's not as if the market is actually looking for net income here. It's a young company, and still in a high-growth phase. Traders are willing to give the company time to get the proverbial ball rolling, and it seems to be using that time wisely.

Todd Williamson/Invision for Monster Energy Drinks/AP They're controversial and they're not cheap, but carbonated energy drinks are still growing in popularity. Though traditional soda sales have been sluggish, consumers can't seem to get enough of the fizzy, adrenaline-spiking beverages. Red Bull and Monster Beverage (MNST) dominate this market, commanding more than 80 percent of the sales in this country. The pesky presence of regulators, politicians, and activists concerned about the long-term effects of consuming these drinks aren't fazing folks seeking a quick burst of energy. A Monster is Rising According to Symphony IRI data that was compiled by Bloomberg last summer, U.S. energy drink sales had increased nearly 7 percent to $9.7 billion through the previous 12 months. That's not too shabby for a category coming under fire, but it was some serious deceleration from the better than 30 percent surge in 2011 and still healthy 21 percent pop in 2012. There was a period when investigations into deaths that might have been linked to energy drink consumption were in the news, but, now that the headlines fare starting to fade, we're back to cracking open Monster Energy cans. Monster Beverage posted strong quarterly results last week, experiencing a 15 percent surge in net sales. Revenue had only climbed 6.5 percent through the year's first two quarters and 7.3 percent through the first nine months of the year. Clearly top-line growth is starting to accelerate again, and that's good news for the industry in general and Monster in particular. Just don't mistake Monster's accelerating growth with a renewed interest in flavored sodas. Cola Wars Run Low on Ammo The fizzy bubbles for Coca-Cola (KO) and PepsiCo (PEP) are rising too slowly these days. Coca-Cola reported global volume climbed just 1 percent during the fourth quarter and just 2 percent for all of 2013, and that includes many of the beverage giant's other drink offerings. The long-term investment king should be familiar to longtime Fool readers. Energy drink giant Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST  ) , formerly known as Hansen Natural, crushed all comers with a 22,200% return. That's nearly 72% per year on a sustained 10-year run, though the pace slowed down considerably in the back half of this jaw-dropping jump. Monster shares have "only" tripled in the last five years, which sounds weak only when compared to the nearly 60-bagger return of the previous five years.

In response to this shift in consumer preferences, Dean Foods (DF) was quick to spin off its fast-growing WhiteWave division, which makes Horizon Organic Milk and Silk soy products, into WhiteWave Foods (WWAV). WhiteWave Foods competes with the likes of Hain Celestial (HAIN) and Blue Diamond Growers in the plant-based beverages market, but is it a good buy?

    Private-label pressures
Regardless, private labels are becoming a bigger problem for companies such as Kraft and, to a lesser extent, Mondelez. According to an industry profile compiled by First Research, these brands typically cost 20% to 40% less than name-brand products. Couple that with the fact that more consumers are ditching big brands, and we can easily see why ConAgra (NYSE: CAG  ) , Cott (NYSE: COT  ) , and others are continually strengthening their private-label positions.

C&C says the cider market is growing 9% to 10% globally, and we're seeing a number of other brewers also recognize the potential. Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) introducedStella Artois Cidre andMichelob Ultra Light Cider, Heineken distributes the U.K.-basedStrongbow brand, and the joint venture of SABMiller and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) , Miller Coors, acquired Crispin cider.

As the owner of both hard liquor and beer lines, Diageo must split its focus along two fronts. In spirits it must grapple against its two primary foes, Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-B  ) , maker of Jack Daniel's and Southern Comfort, and Beam (NYSE: BEAM  ) , which (surprise, surprise!) makes Jim Beam, as well as Maker's Mark and other brands of spirits. In beer, it goes up against domestic and global giants like Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) .

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Part of the problem is the changing tastes of consumers. In addition to craft beer's popularity, hard ciders and teas are gaining popularity, too. Boston Beersaw depletions grow 16% last quarter primarily because of the emphasis it placed on its Angry Orchard cider and Twisted Teas, and Bud recently introduced its Stella Artois Cidre brand. Last year, bothSABMiller and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) acquiredcider maker Crispin through their MillerCoors joint venture.

  • [By BusinessWeek]

Bud Light may still be America's best-selling beer -- it has been for more than a decade -- but retail sales of this and other leading lower-calorie lagers such as Bud Light Lime, Miller Lite, and Natural (aka Natty) Light, declined in 2013, according to data from IRI, a Chicago market research firm. Not that this spells the end of light beers, which still make up a significant chunk of the market. Even as big brewers push into the craft segment, some big-name labels are still experiencing an uptick. Case sales of Coors Light, which became the No. 2 beer brand in the U.S. in 2012, grew nearly 1.8 percent last year, according to IRI. Michelob Ultra Light sales were also up, although it is an outlier in a fast-declining Michelob franchise. "There will always be a place for 'Big Lager' as it's more drinkable in the sense that one can have many lagers but only a few dark beers," says Euromonitor International analyst Edward Hsyeh. "The dark beers are heavy in body, so there can only be so much 'share of the stomach' they possess." Still, big challenges loom: First, Americans' growing thirst for darker, more flavorful brews can't be ignored. Volume sales of lager-a lighter style of beer-have fallen every year since 2009 except 2012, according to Euromonitor's data, though the vast majority of beer consumed in the U.S. is still lager. Sales of pale ales, on the other hand, were up by 13 percent in 2013 alone, and wheat beer grew by 6 percent. The shift is reflected in the recent craft beer boom (volume sales grew 13 percent in the first half of 2013) in which India Pale Ale has become popular. Second, aside from craft, the big brands are seeing competition from imports, too. Modelo Especial volume sales, for example, more than doubled since 2009, according to IRI, and sales of Corona were up 11 percent. Last, hard ciders and new beer-like varieties such as AB InBev's (BUD) Bud Light Lime Straw-Ber-Rita, which sold more than 7 million cases since launching last

Small cap Sodastream International Ltd (NASDAQ: SODA), an Israeli based developer, manufacturer and marketer ofhome beverage carbonation systems, has attracted its share of hype over both its products and its stock, but could other small cap water stocks like Primo Water Corporation (NASDAQ: PRMW), Puresafe Water Systems Inc (OTCMKTS: PSWS) and Alkaline Water Company Inc (OTCBB: WTER) attract a similar following? After all, Sodastream International has managed to create a significant amount of buzz from consumers, investors and even short sellers because it theworld's largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of home carbonation systems as itsbrands are sold in over 60,000 retail stores in 45 countries. But its current valuationt trades at 31 times earningsakes me pause. At that price, you are implicitly expecting one of two things to happen:

The American whiskey boom continues unabated for yearsnd isn replaced by something new and trendy. Brown-Forman will be acquired by a larger competitor (think Diageo or Pernod-Ricard (PDRDY)).

The first assumption is one I be hesitant to make given the whims of fashion. And the second is even less likely. Brown-Forman is family controlled, and in the past the company has very adamant about preserving its independence.
