Top 5 Mid Cap Stocks To Invest In 2014

Top-performing funds tend to attract a lot of money. That what happened to Wells Fargo Advantage Discovery (STDIX), which recently closed to new customers after seeing its asset base nearly doubled, to more than $3 billion, over the past five years. As is our custom, the closure prompted us to remove the mutual fund from the Kiplinger 25 and set us in search of a replacement.

AT A GLANCE: Kiplinger's 25 Favorite No-Load Funds

The newest member of the list of our favorite no-load funds is Parnassus Mid Cap (PARMX). As the name indicates, Parnassus prowls among midsize companies, which for it means generally investing in stocks with market capitalizations, at the time of purchase, of $3 billion to $20 billion. What the name doesn say is that Parnassus practices socially responsible investing, making it the first such fund to join the Kip 25. The fund favors companies that it believes behave ethically, and it won invest in tobacco stocks, beer and booze companies or weapons makers, among others.

Cheniere also has received other good news on Corpus Christi. To get a permit for the unrestricted export of liquefied natural gas, a facility has to win approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). DOE has accelerated its permit process, but FERC approval has become a major bottleneck, since the commission needs to coordinate studies from several other agencies before it can complete its review. Cheniere has recently received a scheduling notice from FERC, which looks to put that facility on track for a permit ruling by the end of 2014 or early 2015.

Advisors' Opinion:

A more likely suitor these days would be a company like Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN  ) . The gene-sequencing company was at one point eyed as a takeover target itself by Roche, but it has done some of its own acquiring in 2013. Illumina bought prenatal test maker Verinata Health in Februaryand another unnamed "development-stage company" in the first quarter.

Some of the stocks he likes now include: Illumina (ILMN), Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN), Actavis (ACT), and United Rentals (URI). All of these are up more than 20% this year with Illumina up over 50%.
