Hot Media Companies To Buy For 2015

Major indexes broke through round-number barriers Tuesday as the rally on Wall Street takes stocks to levels some thought they wouldn't see in a long while.

The Wilshire 5000 index, the broadest measure of the entire stock market, jumped 322.29 points to close at 20,133.02. It's the first major U.S. stock index to close above 20,000. And the much-watched measure of shares of small companies, the Russell 2000, jumped 32 points to close at a new high of 1208.38, breaking the 1200 barrier for the first time.

JOB GROWTH: Investors eye Friday report

The rally was a recovery from Monday's slide and came after Russian President Vladimir Putin made statements indicating he isn't planning to immediately escalate military efforts in Crimea. And with that major scare out of the way for now, big round numbers of psychological import are starting to dominate chatter from Wall Street to the water cooler. The Standard & Poor's 500, at Tuesday's close of 1873.91, is knocking on the door of 1900. And talk that Nasdaq 5000 is actually looking possible is surfacing for the first time in 15 years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Ehrman and Alison Southwick]

The battle for your viewing dollars continues to intensify, and many cable and satellite providers have begun to protest over the high cost of sports programming. WhileComcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA  ) and DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV  ) are looking at average viewership, they're asking the wrong question. Disrupting the overall industry is the growing availability of streaming sports through the various leagues and online versions of Disney's (NYSE: DIS  ) ESPN.

DirectTV (DTV)has gained 2.5% this morning on reports that AT&T (T) is in talks to purchase it for $50 billion. AT&T has dropped 0.8%.

Charter Communications, Inc. was founded in 1999 and is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

What specifically led both stocks higher today was speculation that Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) is on the acquisition hunt. According to CNBC, Time Warner Cable's CEO Glenn Britt has discussed the possibility of merging with Charter; however, CNBC also commented that Time Warner Cable isn't likely to pursue the deal. That still proved more than enough to send Time Warner Cable and rival Cablevision higher, as any M&A acquisition in this sector would only serve to improve pricing power for these broadcasting companies.

Both Bow Tie and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) , which owned the Clearview chain, announced yesterday they had completed the transfer of ownership of the theaters, which was first announced in April, though financial terms for the transaction were not disclosed. As the oldest cinema company in the U.S.,Bow Tie says it now has the largest number of theater locations in the New York metropolitan area, and operates 63 movie theaters with 388 screens in seven states.

Leading the charge is cable operator Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) again found itself in the spotlight, up 9.6%, following the completion of its sale of Optimum West to Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) for $1.625 billion. While shareholders are likely to be pleased seeing this deal completed, shares are really ramping up in expectation that Charter may make a bid for Cablevision. Rumors have been circulating for a week based on a report from Bloomberg News that Charter may look to make a bid for Time Warner Cableor Cablevision. My stance remains not to chase rumors higher, so I'd suggest watching Cablevision from the sidelines.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

Why the rush forward to provide Clearwire with funding? You can bet it's for the large cache of spectrum licenses Clearwire controls. DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) has already made a $2.2 billion offer to buy 24% of Clearwire's spectrum, and Verizonhas offered to buy between $1 billion and $1.5 billion for a portion of spectrum.

  • [By Michael Lewis]

The ongoing battle for spectrum-laden telecommunications firm Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR  ) has taken a turn from superiority arguments to that of legality. This week, majority equity owner and financier (as well as a pending takeover target) Sprint (NYSE: S  ) alleged that challenging bidder DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) not only offers an inferior bid to Clearwire shareholders, but that it cannot legally be done. Unsurprisingly, DISH management was quick to disagree. For investors in all three companies, the news has some important implications. Here's what you need to know.
